ACTIONS
It’s Time to Vote NOW!
There is less than a week until Election Day on Tuesday, November 3. Don’t dilly-dally any longer! Get that ballot completed and drop it off in the Ballot Box located in front of the Vashon Library.
GET TRUSTED VOTING INFORMATION:
Heard about the website Vote Safe? Great title, right? The truth is that it’s funded by Elon Musk’s PAC, and its real function is to gather your data. Use trusted websites to check your registration and get voting information:
WHAT’S ON MY BALLOT?
We all probably know the names Jayapal, Alvarado, Fitzgibbon, Mosqueda, and Thomas as Representatives that are already working hard for our district and are running for reelection. We join Seattle Indivisible in recommending the following:
Judges/Justices:
- Position 1: Justice Colleen Melody
- Position 3: Judge Jaime Hawk
- Position 4: Judge Ian Birk
- Position 5: Justice Theo Angelis
- Position 7: Chief Justice Debra Stephens
NO votes on all three Initiatives:
- No on I-001 – Parental Right to Review Education Materials & Receive Notifications (This sounds good on the surface but is potentially very harmful for LGBTQ students and abuse victims. No Hate in WA State strongly recommends a No vote as this will destroy the trust school kids currently have when sharing confidential information with school counselors and teachers.)
- No on I-638 – Sex Verification for Female School Sports (All girls should be allowed to play school sports — without an invasive medical exam.)
- No on I-645 – Repeal of Millionaires Tax (This would destroy the progress that was making our tax system more progressive.)

HAVEN’T RECEIVED YOUR BALLOT YET?
It’s not too late! You have options:
- Contact the WA Secretary of State Office.
- Print a replacement ballot at Vote.WA.Gov.
CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT’S ON YOUR BALLOT?
Check out voter information on our Actions page. Once completed, drop off your ballot at a King County BALLOT BOX (Vashon’s is at the library) — NOT the Post Office, and not a ballot box in another WA county!
VOTING DEADLINE:
The absolute deadline for casting your ballot is 8:00 pm, Tuesday, November 3. King County elections workers promptly close the ballot box at that time. That means if you’re still waiting in line in your car at 8:00 pm, you can’t vote! If you’re cutting it close: park your car and walk to the ballot box. The best way to make sure? Don’t wait; cast your ballot NOW!
GET OUT THE VOTE Nationally:
Person-to-person contact is the most effective method to persuade reluctant people to vote. Your work can impact votes in critical races.
- Check out our Guide to help WIN the midterms and regain progressive control of Congress. As the outcome of Congressional races move in favor of the Dems, we continue to update the “on the bubble” list showing the most important races and how you can help those candidates win.
- Postcarding: Mailing deadline has passed. Stay tuned for possible opportunities for Run-Off Elections.
- Phonebanking: Check out all the phonebanking opportunities you can do to reach out and talk to potential voters.
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
Talk to… well, EVERYONE about how important it is to vote (especially in this midterm, and especially in swing districts and states!). Each newsletter will include a fact that you can share in those conversations. Here’s your fourth one:
TRUMP’S LIE: ‘We’re going to grow like nobody’s ever grown before.’ (Economic Club of New York, Sept. 5, 2024)

In this year’s second quarter, growth dropped to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent, a shift substantially caused or exacerbated by Mr. Trump’s policies. Rising energy prices and inflation. Decreased government spending. A deteriorating trade balance, thanks to his tariffs. That’s added up to materially slower growth than the healthy 2.75 percent rate that Mr. Trump was bequeathed by President Joe Biden.

Election Eve Hopium Sparkle Party
Yes, it’s imperative that we keep meeting this moment with focused rage and concerted effort. It’s also important — no, crucial — that we practice JOY. By the time the evening of Nov 2 rolls around, we will have, for the briefest moment, done most of what we can do. We’ll have voted, donated, rallied. Postcarded, phonebanked, canvassed. We’ll have done everything we can possibly think of (Right? RIGHT??) to slay the midterms. There will be a tiny pause while we, as a nation, wait.
While we pause, instead of holding our breath in fear, let’s spread a little joy. At the same time, let’s encourage last-minute voters to GET THOSE BALLOTS TO THE BOX!
Join us at the 4-way for one last pre-Election Day rally, before we hand it back to the bucket drummers for the big day! Inspired by Patricia’s sequined VOTE banner and Nick’s daughter’s bedazzled VOTE pins, we’re calling this event our Hopium Sparkle Party — because no matter what’s to come, in those moments before results roll in, we’ll need an infusion of hope and joy.
We’ll have party lights; bubbles; an impeccable pop playlist featuring Black, Latinx, Asian, and Queer artists (because diversity is part of what makes America ACTUALLY great); and — of course — each other. We’ll rally, we’ll dance, we’ll HOPE. And we’ll do it together. Wear your sparkliest outfit, or borrow from our rolling sequin closet. Bring your VOTE sign, help hold Patricia’s fabulous banner, or just dance your heart out.
When: Monday, November 2, 4:00 to 5:30 pm
Where: The 4-way, of course!
If you have any sparkles to temporarily donate, bring them along! Someone who doesn’t own sparkles will get a chance to shine, and you’ll get your items back immediately after the event.
Afterward, join us as we drink & dine at The Hardware Store bar. Let’s spend Election Eve together, and let’s spend our dollars to thank THS for supporting our efforts over these past weeks.

It’s no longer a question of IF. It’s a matter of WHEN.
ICE is now actively terrorizing communities in King County and in our state. It’s only a matter of time until they come onto our island. This is a very frightening thought for all of us. They purport to only be going after people who have committed crimes and aren’t in the US legally. But we all know this isn’t the case, most prominently as evidenced by events in Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, and most recently Minneapolis. People of every race, legal status, and walk of life have been beaten, detained, terrorized. Kept in reportedly monstrously inhumane conditions. And, in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, they were shot in cold blood for the “crime” of trying to help their fellow citizens.
So how do we prepare, and how do we react? What can we do to keep Vashon families and our community safe? While we cannot prevent ICE from coming to Vashon, we CAN prepare ourselves to safely and legally make their visit as uncomfortable as possible.

Guidelines for Bystanders and Observers: In the U.S., everyone has certain constitutional rights and protections regardless of their immigration status — or who is president. You have the legal right to film police and/or immigration officers if they are in a public place and if the filming does not impede the performance of their duties.
Documenting ICE activity:
- Stay at a safe distance: The general rule is about 10 feet. Assess your own risk tolerance and “safety zone” ahead of time, so that you can stay calm under stress. If you’re asked to step back, take a step back while repeating: “I am exercising my right to record and document.”
- If the officer gets too close: Say, “I am stepping back and have the right to record.” Speak in a calm, audible voice.
- Protect video content on your phone: Make sure your phone is passcode protected. Disable fingerprint or face recognition. You might also consider equipping yourself with a wearable camera, both to keep your hands free and eliminate the danger of your phone being snatched.
- Focus your recording of ICE officers: Record all the way through the incident. Narrate what you’re seeing. Say the date and time.
- DO NOT GO LIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Please protect the privacy and safety of the people being detained.
- ALWAYS do a self-risk assessment in advance about what your personal “safe distance” is. For some, 6-10 feet may suffice, others may feel comfortable with 20+ feet. Practice what your safe distance looks/feels like so you are comfortable under stress.
What to document:
- ICE officer identification: Name, badge, uniforms, vests
- Date, Time, Location: Location with specific address
- Language used by officers: Hate speech and identity speech (racist, sexist, homophobic), incorrect or unproven statements
- Enforcement Agency vehicles: If they are marked or the license plate states Police, Sheriff, Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration Enforcement (ICE), unmarked but possible government vehicles
- Violence or physical force: Pushing, shoving, grabbing, violence during arrests, damaging of property
Add this SALUTE webform to your phone’s home screen or contacts. It guides you through what information to capture about an action (in a draft text), which you can edit before copying and pasting into a text to the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN) (1-844-724-3737) to activate Indivisible Vashon’s Rapid Response.
TO REPORT ICE ACTIVITY: Call Vashon Community Response at 564-225-2161
TO RECEIVE ALERTS ABOUT ICE ACTIVITY IN THE AREA: Sign up for alerts with Stopicealert.ddns.net
SEND VIDEOS, NOTES, PICTURES: Please send to the WAISN hotline.
VASHON-SPECIFIC INFORMATION:
- Homeland Security (DHS) regularly visits Vashon to carry out ferry security. To date, they are not doing immigration sweeps and they do not wear masks. If you think you see ICE, please take photos, note the time/place, and then report to the WAISN hotline asap to help determine whether your sighting is a ferry check or something more.
- Our Immigrant/Refugee Rights Team has many things already in place on the island. They have been working closely with our immigrant community to set up teams to do Rapid Response, Accompaniment, Court Watch, Fundraising, etc. If you would like to get involved and get training, please contact Jenna.
- When ICE comes to Vashon, they likely WON’T be spending the night as we don’t have hotels on the island. This means we won’t have the opportunity to disrupt their sleep (aww shucks…) but we can still make noise and alert others to their presence.
- UPDATED WHISTLE KITS: One of our amazing Leadership Team members, Evan, has whistle kits! Please fill out this form to request kits, learn how to use them, or volunteer to help out.

Message from Indivisible Vashon Leadership:
I was mulling over this intro and was pondering how to make “Get Out the Vote” and “Come Join Us” sound different and fresh. Then the news broke that the Supreme Court had ruled against USPS screening mail-in ballots (gift NYT article)! Of course, Trump ranted that the Justices he appointed were “not the people I interviewed” – crybaby! The rest of us celebrated SCOTUS finally making a sensible ruling and breathed a sigh of relief. We’ll have our ballots delivered – at least for the November midterms. Make no mistake: the war is not over, but we have won this battle. We owe WA State AG Nick Brown a huge debt for leading the fight against this unjust executive order. Send him a thank you!

We now need to all step up and encourage our fellow progressives to vote, as well as have the hard conversations with swing voters about why to vote progressive. All of our Indivisible Vashon teams are collaborating on this effort. And, oh, yeah — spread the word that we need to vote EARLY!
To quote the great Billie Eilish: Not showing up is not an option.
~ Kathy, Leadership Team

“Trump recognizes that the biggest threat to his dream of autocracy comes from members of the resistance who stand on roadsides and bridges, write postcards to voters, knock on doors, and rally others to register and vote. Trump fears them more than anyone or anything else, so he is engaging in psychological warfare to make them believe that resistance is futile. Resistance is not futile. It is the path forward.”
~ Robert Hubble
Message from a Fellow Indivisible Member:

If, around town in Vashon, you happen to see a gentleman in 1770s colonial dress, please go over and introduce yourself. Mr. Thomas Paine, author of the bestselling and very influential pamphlet Common Sense, died in 1809 — yet somehow he’s found himself reincarnated here on Vashon! He has no idea how it happened, and is as astonished by the event as we are. The current political situation in America surely explains the timing — for example he definitely doesn’t approve of this week’s $1.776B slush fund, and takes great offense to the 1776 allusion — but why Vashon? Surely his adopted home of Philadelphia would make more sense? Mr. Paine, however, has confided to me that he does not think his arrival on Vashon is a coincidence. “There is something about this community,” he says, “that is essential to our national progress towards a more perfect union.” Mr. Paine has therefore expressed to me a very keen desire to converse with our townsfolk, in order to divine what that “something” might be. I do hope you will be able to help enlighten him.
