PROTESTS

Thank you to all who have been showing up to stop Trump & the GOP regime at Marches and

Rallies!

We are showing up for Immigrants, Unions & Workers, Rule of Law, and as Protecters of our Democracy.

WAY TO GO!! We need to keep the pressure growing until we have tens of millions peacefully rallying!

  • Bruce Springstein just released a MOVING protest song, Minneapolis. Watch HERE. (Warning: the video does contain scenes of the horrific violence happening in Minneapolis – it is a must see for all of us to be fully aware of the attrocities this regime is inflicting upon it’s own citizens.)

May Day – Kick Off Economic Pressure

Our Economic Pressure Kickoff on May 1st was a rousing success! Lots of fun was had through music, song, and dancing. Many thanks to the Vashon Community Street Band and the IV Bucket Brigade for bringing the enthusiasm.

Now let’s lean in on exerting our economic power against the businesses that are supporting the regime:

  • Shop local instead of large businesses and corporations.
  • Use cash – no more money to big banks.
  • Shop farm stands to support our local farmers.

Scroll to bottom of this page for more pictures!

When: Saturday, May 9, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. This event is a protected expression of our First Amendment rights. We expect all participants to avoid escalating confrontations with those who disagree with our values. We prioritize keeping all members of our community safe. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

    No Kings 3

No Kings 3 was historic! Over 8 million people joined over 3,300 protests in all 50 states and on every continent, including Antarctica. Vashonites were out in the streets on-island, in Tacoma, in Seattle, and even as far away as Europe and Mexico!

Of course, while a huge event is uplifting and important, it’s not enough on its own. We need to start putting economic pressure on the regime and the organizations that support it. (See the May Day and Boycott sections)

Scroll down to the bottom of this page to check out pictures from No Kings 3, & send us yours at info@indivisiblevashon.org

An ENORMOUS thank you to ALL who helped to make the NK3 protests a success.

      Let’s Talk Protest

Next Protest Group meeting: ALL are welcome – help plan for upcoming protests, events, and trainings.

When: Tuesday, May 12, 5:00 to 6:30 pm

Where: Backbone Campaign Warehouse, Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave SW

“We Ain’t Buying It” Continuing Boycott

Let’s all change our shopping habits! Now that you’ve seen how easy it is to cut the habit of shopping on Amazon or popping into Target, let’s keep it up. Avoid Amazon, Target, Home Depot and Starbucks, just to list a few. Please DO support local and small businesses!

Boycotts DO work! Target & Tesla have seen huge drops in their sales; Avelo Airlines and Spotify have declined to renew their contracts with DHS; Disney reinstated the Jimmy Kimmel show.

We can all say NO to exploitation – and YES to empowerment. REMEMBER: SHOP LOCAL AND USE CASH!!

          Bucket Brigade

The Bucket Brigade gets many requests to attend area protests, and most recently to help neighboring groups form their own drum corps. Imagine one day being able to have 100 drummers all marching together to celebrate the end of the fascist regime!

Next practice (new members of ALL skill levels are ALWAYS welcome):

When: Tuesday, May 5, 5:00 to 6:30 pm (and every other Tuesday)

Where: Sheila’s house – firepit helps keep us warm on her patio!

Email for meeting location and any questions. (We have drum kits available for a $5.00 donation.)

Cannot wait and want to make a drum on your own? How to turn a 5-gallon bucket into a drum:

          • Clean your favorite empty 5-gallon bucket.
          • Remove handle (optional – some like to keep the handle to carry the drum, sticks and other parade-related items)
          • Drill two half-inch holes: two inches below the closed end of the bucket, the second hole about 1/3 of the way around the bucket from the first. (Alternate method – one hole towards the closed end of bucket and another just under the reinforced top in a straight line from each other)
          • Starting with an 8-foot length of 3/8-inch diameter nylon, hemp or cotton rope, thread one end through the open end of the bucket and through your first drilled hole. Tie a knot in the end of the rope, then pull the knot snug against the inside of the bucket.
          • Thread the other end into the bucket through the second hole. Tie a knot inside the bucket, then snug it up, and sling the rope over your shoulder. Adjust the length so the top of your drum hangs somewhere between mid-thigh and your navel. Try drumming, and adjust the drum’s level as you see fit.
          • Optional: Once you have a good fit, mark a spot where the rim of the drum comes closest to your belt line. Drill another half-inch hole there, and thread a piece of rope into the bucket, knot it, snug it up, and measure off a short piece that will allow you to tie the drum to your belt to keep it in place. You might also want to bump the drum away from your tummy; you can do this by gluing some foam padding to the bucket.
          • Sticks: Two 16-inch lengths of 5/8-inch wooden dowel. You can use these “as is” or turn them into drum mallets as follows: Staple the rope (probably any kind of rope would work – we used 1/4 inch sisal) onto the stick about 2-3″ down from top, wind tightly up to top and come over the end of the stick, staple there to keep in place, wind back down to the start, staple. Wrap cut rubber bike innertube tightly around the rope from top to bottom (tucking a flap down to anchor the rubber at the top) and duct tape it in place around the dowel at the bottom.  Makes a much better sound than a bare dowel. Optional: keep one dowel plain to have a variety of sounds.
          • You can also use standard drumsticks or mallets.
