VOTING DEADLINE:

The absolute deadline for casting your ballot is 8:00 pm, Tuesday, November 3. King County elections workers promptly close the ballot box at that time. That means if you’re still waiting in line in your car at 8:00 pm, you can’t vote! If you’re cutting it close: park your car and walk to the ballot box. The best way to make sure? Don’t wait; cast your ballot NOW!

Election Eve Hopium Sparkle Party

Yes, it’s imperative that we keep meeting this moment with focused rage and concerted effort. It’s also important — no, crucial — that we practice JOY. By the time the evening of Nov 2 rolls around, we will have, for the briefest moment, done most of what we can do. We’ll have voted, donated, rallied. Postcarded, phonebanked, canvassed. We’ll have done everything we can possibly think of (Right? RIGHT??) to slay the midterms. There will be a tiny pause while we, as a nation, wait.

While we pause, instead of holding our breath in fear, let’s spread a little joy. At the same time, let’s encourage last-minute voters to GET THOSE BALLOTS TO THE BOX!

Join us at the 4-way for one last pre-Election Day rally, before we hand it back to the bucket drummers for the big day! Inspired by Patricia’s sequined VOTE banner and Nick’s daughter’s bedazzled VOTE pins, we’re calling this event our Hopium Sparkle Party — because no matter what’s to come, in those moments before results roll in, we’ll need an infusion of hope and joy.

We’ll have party lights; bubbles; an impeccable pop playlist featuring Black, Latinx, Asian, and Queer artists (because diversity is part of what makes America ACTUALLY great); and — of course — each other. We’ll rally, we’ll dance, we’ll HOPE. And we’ll do it together. Wear your sparkliest outfit, or borrow from our rolling sequin closet. Bring your VOTE sign, help hold Patricia’s fabulous banner, or just dance your heart out.

When: Monday, November 2, 4:00 to 5:30 pm

Where: The 4-way, of course!

If you have any sparkles to temporarily donate, bring them along! Someone who doesn’t own sparkles will get a chance to shine, and you’ll get your items back immediately after the event.

Afterward, join us as we drink & dine at The Hardware Store bar. Let’s spend Election Eve together, and let’s spend our dollars to thank THS for supporting our efforts over these past weeks.

Let’s all change our shopping habits! Now that you’ve seen how easy it is to cut the habit of shopping on Amazon or popping into Target, let’s keep it up. Avoid Amazon, Target, Home Depot and Starbucks, just to list a few. Please DO support local and small businesses!

Boycotts DO work! Target & Tesla have seen huge drops in their sales; Avelo Airlines and Spotify have declined to renew their contracts with DHS; Disney reinstated the Jimmy Kimmel show.

Bucket Brigade

The Bucket Brigade gets many requests to attend area protests, and most recently to help neighboring groups form their own drum corps. Imagine one day being able to have 100 drummers all marching together to celebrate the end of the fascist regime!

Cannot wait and want to make a drum on your own? How to turn a 5-gallon bucket into a drum:

Clean your favorite empty 5-gallon bucket.
Remove handle (optional – some like to keep the handle to carry the drum, sticks and other parade-related items)
Drill two half-inch holes: two inches below the closed end of the bucket, the second hole about 1/3 of the way around the bucket from the first. (Alternate method – one hole towards the closed end of bucket and another just under the reinforced top in a straight line from each other)
Starting with an 8-foot length of 3/8-inch diameter nylon, hemp or cotton rope, thread one end through the open end of the bucket and through your first drilled hole. Tie a knot in the end of the rope, then pull the knot snug against the inside of the bucket.
Thread the other end into the bucket through the second hole. Tie a knot inside the bucket, then snug it up, and sling the rope over your shoulder. Adjust the length so the top of your drum hangs somewhere between mid-thigh and your navel. Try drumming, and adjust the drum’s level as you see fit.
Optional: Once you have a good fit, mark a spot where the rim of the drum comes closest to your belt line. Drill another half-inch hole there, and thread a piece of rope into the bucket, knot it, snug it up, and measure off a short piece that will allow you to tie the drum to your belt to keep it in place. You might also want to bump the drum away from your tummy; you can do this by gluing some foam padding to the bucket.
Sticks: Two 16-inch lengths of 5/8-inch wooden dowel. You can use these “as is” or turn them into drum mallets as follows: Staple the rope (probably any kind of rope would work – we used 1/4 inch sisal) onto the stick about 2-3″ down from top, wind tightly up to top and come over the end of the stick, staple there to keep in place, wind back down to the start, staple. Wrap cut rubber bike innertube tightly around the rope from top to bottom (tucking a flap down to anchor the rubber at the top) and duct tape it in place around the dowel at the bottom. Makes a much better sound than a bare dowel. Optional: keep one dowel plain to have a variety of sounds.
You can also use standard drumsticks or mallets.

The Vashon community continues to reel after the sudden, tragic death of long-time activist Maridee Bonadea. She was a force who championed LGBTQ rights, lesbian mothers, and was passionate about people being treated fairly.

A vigil at the site in West Seattle was attended by friends, family, fellow cyclists, and members of SURJ and the Bucket Brigade. About 150 cyclists from Critical Mass rode to the site to advocate for safer streets.

We placed a bucket was placed onto the ghost bike. One bright spot is that they have blocked parking along that side of Fauntleroy Ave.

Our hearts are broken, especially for her wife, Laura, and daughter, Lani.

APRIL 5th – HANDS OFF!

Vashonites went to Olympia, Seattle, and the 4-way stop in town to protest the overreach of the administration on April 5th as part of the nationwide HANDS OFF! protests. Over 5 million people nationwide took part!

APRIL 19th – Say Their Names – Bring Them Home

Approx. 150 Vashonites gathered to march north to the 4 way stop to rally in support of Immigrants’ rights to Due Process and fair treatment and to speak out against the abuses of power by the Trump Administration. There were protests all across the US with an estimated 4 million showing up!
