It’s no longer a question of IF. It’s a matter of WHEN.
ICE is now actively terrorizing communities in King County and in our state. It’s only a matter of time until they come onto our island. This is a very frightening thought for all of us. They purport to only be going after people who have committed crimes and aren’t in the US legally. But we all know this isn’t the case, most prominently as evidenced by events in Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, and most recently Minneapolis. People of every race, legal status, and walk of life have been beaten, detained, terrorized. Kept in reportedly monstrously inhumane conditions. And, in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, they were shot in cold blood for the “crime” of trying to help their fellow citizens.
So how do we prepare, and how do we react? What can we do to keep Vashon families and our community safe? While we cannot prevent ICE from coming to Vashon, we CAN prepare ourselves to safely and legally make their visit as uncomfortable as possible.

When: March 20, 25; April 1, 10

More Info:
Guidelines for Bystanders and Observers: In the U.S., everyone has certain constitutional rights and protections regardless of their immigration status — or who is president. You have the legal right to film police and/or immigration officers if they are in a public place and if the filming does not impede the performance of their duties.
Documenting ICE activity:
- Stay at a safe distance: The general rule is about 10 feet. Assess your own risk tolerance and “safety zone” ahead of time, so that you can stay calm under stress. If you’re asked to step back, take a step back while repeating: “I am exercising my right to record and document.”
- If the officer gets too close: Say, “I am stepping back and have the right to record.” Speak in a calm, audible voice.
- Protect video content on your phone: Make sure your phone is passcode protected. Disable fingerprint or face recognition. You might also consider equipping yourself with a wearable camera, both to keep your hands free and eliminate the danger of your phone being snatched.
- Focus your recording of ICE officers: Record all the way through the incident. Narrate what you’re seeing. Say the date and time.
- DO NOT GO LIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Please protect the privacy and safety of the people being detained.
- ALWAYS do a self-risk assessment in advance about what your personal “safe distance” is. For some, 6-10 feet may suffice, others may feel comfortable with 20+ feet. Practice what your safe distance looks/feels like so you are comfortable under stress.
What to document:
- ICE officer identification: Name, badge, uniforms, vests
- Date, Time, Location: Location with specific address
- Language used by officers: Hate speech and identity speech (racist, sexist, homophobic), incorrect or unproven statements
- Enforcement Agency vehicles: If they are marked or the license plate states Police, Sheriff, Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration Enforcement (ICE), unmarked but possible government vehicles
- Violence or physical force: Pushing, shoving, grabbing, violence during arrests, damaging of property
Add this SALUTE webform to your phone’s home screen or contacts. It guides you through what information to capture about an action (in a draft text), which you can edit before copying and pasting into a text to the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN) (1-844-724-3737) to activate Indivisible Vashon’s Rapid Response.
TO REPORT ICE ACTIVITY: Call Vashon Community Response at 564-225-2161
TO RECEIVE ALERTS ABOUT ICE ACTIVITY IN THE AREA: Sign up for alerts with Stopicealert.ddns.net
SEND VIDEOS, NOTES, PICTURES: Please send to the WAISN hotline.
VASHON-SPECIFIC INFORMATION:
- Homeland Security (DHS) regularly visits Vashon to carry out ferry security. To date, they are not doing immigration sweeps and they do not wear masks. If you think you see ICE, please take photos, note the time/place, and then report to the WAISN hotline asap to help determine whether your sighting is a ferry check or something more.
- Our Immigrant/Refugee Rights Team has many things already in place on the island. They have been working closely with our immigrant community to set up teams to do Rapid Response, Accompaniment, Court Watch, Fundraising, etc. If you would like to get involved and get training, please contact Jenna.
- When ICE comes to Vashon, they likely WON’T be spending the night as we don’t have hotels on the island. This means we won’t have the opportunity to disrupt their sleep (aww shucks…) but we can still make noise and alert others to their presence.
- UPDATED WHISTLE KITS: One of our amazing Leadership Team members, Evan, has whistle kits! Please fill out this form to request kits, learn how to use them, or volunteer to help out.
- Check out the Community Defense page on the website.
Help Support our SeaTac TSA
Our TSA workers at SeaTac have been showing up for work — even though they are not getting paid! The result is that we currently only have about a 10-15 minute wait instead of the HOURS wait we are seeing at other airports like Atlanta.
Please help support our fellow residents of King County who work for TSA by dropping off nonperishable food items and gift cards at the SEA Conference Center (see contact info above). This is a perfect way to thank those who make our air travel safe and as smooth as possible.
Monthly Meeting
Wednesday, April 8
When: 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:30)
Where: Vashon United Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Hwy SW
Upcoming Dates: Wednesday, May 13; Wednesday June 10
If you would like to help with setup/cleanup, please contact Kevin.
Stop Trump’s War with Iran
The American public is firmly against Trump’s war against Iran. Congress must act. Email Senators Cantwell and Murray and Rep. Jayapal to demand they use every lever available to rein in the administration and prevent further escalation. They are spending over $1 billion a day of our tax monies on this unauthorized war – not another dime!
Reject the Deportation & Detention Agenda
Trump and DHS are trying to use money from the Big Ugly Bill to do a massive expansion in detention facilities across the country. They have been buying properties and converting warehouses into camps that will hold human beings in dangerous and horrifying conditions.
We have a chance to stop this expansion by speaking up and demanding that our elected officials speak up, too. Write Senators Murray and Cantwell and Rep. Jayapal to demand they use their power as your elected officials to reject localized expansions of Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda.
Stop the GOP’s New Voter Suppression Legislation
Republicans are once again pushing for a series of voter suppression bills – all variations of their infamous “SAVE Act” – which would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote. Tell Senators Cantwell and Murry and Rep. Jayapal to vote NO on the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, or any similar bill that attacks our voting rights.
Thank Representative Thomas for Supporting Privacy Rights
The Driver Privacy Act seeks to protect privacy by regulating Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR), otherwise known as FLOCK cameras. The bill did pass, but was considerably weakened. Rep. Thomas took the brave position to vote no on the bill because it didn’t go far enough to protect privacy rights. Let’s thank Rep. Thomas for her protest vote.
Email Rep Brianna Thomas – brianna.thomas@leg.wa.gov
Sample script:
Subject: Thank you, Representative Thomas, for your “no” vote on SB 6002!
Dear Representative Thomas,
I agree that regulating Automated License Plate Readers requires strong guardrails to protect Washington residents – especially immigrants, rapid response groups, LGBTQ+ people, organizers, and protestors.
Thank you for recognizing that the bill that emerged from committee was not strong enough to protect us. I encourage you to keep pushing back on these harmful mass surveillance systems in the state legislature.

Reject New HUD Housing Rules That Punish Mixed-Status Families
Under federal law, individuals without US citizenship or eligible immigration status cannot receive housing assistance, but HUD’s long-standing “mixed status rule” allows families with both eligible and ineligible members to live together with financial assistance based only on the eligible members, instead of denying help to the entire household.
Now HUD wants to change that and has issued a rule that households with ineligible members will not receive ANY housing assistance at all (Housing Choice Voucher or live in Public Housing).
When this rule was proposed under the first Trump administration, communities flooded HUD with more than 30,000 comments, and the rule was not implemented. Right now, we have a chance to make our voices heard again!
Deadline: April 21
How to write an effective comment (scroll down to action)
Submit comments online. (You can submit as an individual, an organization, or anonymously.)
Take Action Network (TAN)
The Take Action Network is a fabulous way to keep up on the progress of bills moving through the WA State Senate and House concerning de-masking ICE, use of FLOCK surveillance cameras, and the WA Dept. of Licensing sharing of data. You get the opportunity to sign in PRO on the bills you support. Over 14,000 people signed in support of the de-masking bill while it was in committee!
You can easily find actions that you can take to help support your values. You can set up a search that will send you an email each time there are new actions that meet your criteria. Or, when you are ready to take some action, you can log on and see what is available. TAN is especially useful during the Washington State Legislative Session as bill trackers are posting actions just about daily.

Message from a Fellow Indivisible Member:
“The answer to authoritarianism is in our communities.” ~ Jill, States at the Core
I see a silver lining in this dark fascist cloud: it has reawakened civic connection and collaborative action. I’ve spent less time with my glowing screens, and more time interacting with others face to face. I’ve made more new friends in the last year than in the previous five years put together. In a national crisis, I have found local community. In a time of outrage, I have found hope. As we prepare for the historic national NO KINGS 3 protests on March 28th, I look forward to my distress and anger being transformed within a collective response that is joyous, loving and fun. Some will say that these protests don’t matter, but they do, so very much. When you and I join millions across the nation in peaceful defiance, publicly demonstrating our love of country and love for each other, we signal to many millions more that they need not be alone nor in despair. Joy is our super power. Our numbers will keep growing. When the corruption, depravity, and destructive violence of the GOP/billionaire alliance is defeated, our reawakened civic spirit will remain. We will rebuild our social institutions, reassure our allies, and restore our progress towards a more perfect, more moral nation. See you on March 28th!!!

Vashon for Palestine Film Series:
Award-Winning Films at the Vashon Theater
Vashon for Palestine, in partnership with the Vashon Film Institute, is bringing a powerful lineup of award-winning films to the Vashon Theater this spring. Co-sponsored by CRAB (Creative Resistance Art Brigade), SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice), Vashon Island Unitarian Universalists, and Wild Dreams Farm, these films offer historical context, human stories, and a vital connection to the ongoing struggle for Palestinian rights.
First in the line up is Palestine 36. Set in 1936, this historical drama follows Yusuf, a man torn between his village and his work in Jerusalem as the British Empire tightens its grip on the region. Against a backdrop of anti-colonial revolt and Jewish refugees fleeing persecution in Europe, all sides converge in a defining moment for the land and its people.
Palestine 36 is Palestine’s Official Selection for the 98th Academy Awards and a multiple international award winner.
WHEN: Sunday, April 19, 1:00 pm
WHERE: Vashon Theater
